Baltic Amber
Baltic amber is the fossilized resin or sap from extinct prehistoric coniferous
pine tree which formed a huge forest 40-60 million years ago at the present
location of the Baltic Sea. This lightest of organic gems sometimes have
inclusions of entrapped flora, fauna & insects and provides a connection
with our past. Stone Age sun worshippers, early Greeks, and Romans
believed that wearing amber kept one healthy and young.
The provenance of Baltic amber & jewelry made from Baltic amber is
from the coastal areas of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania , Kaliningrad, &
other Baltic countries, including Russia. Baltic amber has been called "the
sun of the sea" for its glittering golden glow and it is this luminescent
quality of Baltic amber that makes it particularly striking as a setting
in a pair of amber earrings, a ring, an amber bracelet, or a necklace
with a striking Baltic amber pendant. |
